The Incident at Tai Shi

The incident at Tai Shi village is probably destined to go down in the history books on the subject of China’s march to democracy.  It demonstrates not only how much the CCP fears the peasants taking over their own affairs in local government but how far they are prepared to go to prevent it.  But there is an underground of activists who are willing to risk anything to bring about true democratic reform in China and if they can get the farmers and small businessmen behind them, they may grow fast enough to bring about what the constitution guarantees them but the DDP refuses to give – power over their own lives.  This article in the Washington Post lays it out in broad strokes.
